Privacy Policy

Summary

Color Tools is built so that your data stays yours. The colors you enter and the images you open are processed entirely on your device and never leave it. Page views are counted cookie-free and anonymously, and there are no ads. The sections below spell out exactly what that means and what would change if that ever changes.

Local processing

Every tool on color-tools.org is implemented in JavaScript that runs in your browser. When you open an image in the color picker or the palette extractor — via the file dialog, drag and drop, or paste — the file is read locally by your browser and rendered on your own machine. It is never transmitted to us or to anyone else; there is no server-side processing at all, so we could not see your images even if we wanted to. The same applies to every color value you type, convert, compare or check.

Data stored on your device

Some tools remember things for your convenience: saved colors, recent picks, and preferences such as the light or dark theme. This data is stored in your browser’s localStorage under keys that start with ct-. It stays on your device, is not synced or transmitted anywhere, and you can delete it at any time by clearing site data for color-tools.org in your browser settings (usually under Privacy or Site settings).

Images and measurements kept on this device

So you can continue later, the color picker and the measure tools (pixel ruler and measure from a photo) keep the images you open on this device — this is on by default. For each image your browser stores the original file, a small thumbnail, its name, pixel size and file size, and when it was added and last used, in the browser’s own database (IndexedDB, named ct-images). Measurements — calibration, measures, their names and colors — are stored in localStorage under ct-measure. None of it is ever uploaded or sent anywhere; it never leaves your browser. The sample image is never stored.

At most 20 images and 300 MB are kept (8 images and 80 MB on iPhones, iPads and other touch devices with a small screen); a single image over 40 MB (15 MB on those devices) is not kept, and when the limit is reached the image used longest ago is removed first. Measurements are kept for the 30 most recently edited images. To delete: use the trash icon on an image under Recent, or “Forget all”; switch “Keep images on this device” off, which also deletes every kept image; or clear the site data for color-tools.org in your browser settings. After you delete a single image, “Undo” brings it back for about 8 seconds — until then the open page holds it in memory only. Deleting an image does not delete its measurements. Browsers may also clear this storage on their own — Safari may clear stored images after about a week without a visit — so save the measure tool’s project file (.json) to keep your measures for sure. The site’s JSON data export (Export data in My colors) contains your measurements but never the images.

Analytics

To understand which tools are used, this site counts page views with GoatCounter, a privacy-respecting open-source counter: no cookies, no cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting, no advertising IDs, and no sale of data — ever. What is counted is the page path, the referrer, coarse device class and country, nothing that identifies you personally. The colors you work with and the images you open are never part of it — only the page address is reported, never its content or its hash fragment.

Advertising

There are currently no active ads on this site. To keep the tools free, Google AdSense may be enabled in the future. If that happens: Google, as the advertising provider, may process data such as your IP address and your interactions with ads, as described in Google’s own privacy policies; visitors in the EU, EEA and UK will first see a Google-certified consent dialog and can decline personalized ads; and the site’s ads.txt file will identify the publisher account. This page will be updated before any ads go live.

Hosting and server logs

color-tools.org is served as static files from a web server. Like practically any web server, the hosting infrastructure may keep brief technical logs — including IP addresses and requested URLs — for security and operations, for example to detect abuse or diagnose outages. These logs are not used to profile visitors.

Your rights

If you have questions about your data, or want to exercise rights you have under applicable law such as the GDPR, email contact@color-tools.org. Because the tools do not send us your data in the first place, there is usually nothing for us to hand over or delete — but we will answer either way.

Changes to this policy

If the site’s behavior changes — for example, if advertising is introduced — this page will be updated first. Last updated: September 23, 2026.
